P0078 | Hogarth | | Hogarth, William c1750; The March to Finchley or A Representation of the march of the Guards towards Scotland in the year 1745. To His Majesty the King of Prusia; an encourager of the Arts and Sciences! This plate is most humbly dedicated. Engraved by Luke Sullivan.
The work was originally intended as a gift to George II, and a print was sent before the release of the painting to him for his approval. But George II thought the picture made fun of his troop and returned the work to Hogarth, who was reportedly hurt by the King's response to what he considered to be one of his finest works. As a reult of this Hogarth later altered the inscription to read "the King of Prussia", rather than "the King of England", and presented the work to Frederick II of Prussia | | SOLD | |
